Welding for the first time

Welding in the Workshop

A lot of student are really nervous about welding in the workshop and I encourage you all to have a go and not be frightened by the process. Most students in Year 9 have had an experience of welding and are relived to find out its not as difficult as it looks!

What is Welding ???

Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing fusion, which is distinct from lower temperature metal-joining techniques such as brazing and soldering, which do not melt the base metal. In addition to melting the base metal, a filler material is typically added to the joint to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to form a joint that is usually stronger than the base material. Pressure may also be used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce a weld

There are many different types of welding. The type of welding you will experience in the workshop is Oxy Acetylene.

Please make any comments below so that others students can read how you felt, the concerns you had, what were you most afraid of and what you thought afterwards. Any advice you would like to give will be great. About 5-7  sentences would be great!

  1. It was easy once you get into the welding. Make sure to not put too much welding onto the area as it does cause a large bump.

  6. I was actually kind of nervous when we had to use the welding. I thought I was going to burn my overall or something might go wrong. When I started to do welding, I didn't feel that nervous because Mr.Rees was helping me and telling me what to do. Welding is such a fun experience and I should recommend people giving it a go.

  9. I felt really nervous welding for the first time. I was scared of burning someone, something or even myself. After I welded at least the first time it was not that bad at all. I personally enjoyed it and can not wait until i get to do it again. if i had any advice for anyone else welding for the first time it would be to not be scared to ask for help because it can be hard by yourself and the teachers are always willing to help.

  11. I think it looks cool. I didn't manage to weld because we all left it to the last minute and I didn't get to, but I think it's great. My friends all welded and they thought it was cool, so I wouldn't be scared. At first I thought it was really scary but then I saw all of my friends doing it and it looked pretty fun. Be confident, you don't need to be afraid or anything.

  14. I thought welding would be scary at first because i thought i would burn myself but when I started it I thought it was kinda fun and easy because I liked the fire melting the solder and I didn't burn myself

  15. I thought welding was scary at the start because I thought I was going to burn myself. And once you start to weld it is not so scary and if you put to much welding rod onto the metal it causes a big lump and then you have to sand it down until it is smooth. So welding is fun

  16. I was really confident about welding until I actually did so. It was terrifying. You hold a machine that, quite literally, blows fire, but, once I started it I got a lot more confident. Welding seems scary and it is scary, but it is a lot simpler and less complicated than teachers can make it out to look.

  17. At first the thought of welding made me nervous for a variety of reasons such as clothes catching fire, burning myself, etc. Eventually I just caved and decided to just do it. With some help from Mr Rees I discovered that if I'm responsible than it's really easy. Now I don't feel as nervous when I'm welding.

  19. At first welding looked really hard to do. I didn't have ago but just watching it made it look really scary. The flame had to be on blue which meant it was really hot. I was afraid that I was gonna burn myself or do something wrong. On the last week of metal tech I wanted to have ago but something went wrong when someone was trying to weld. The next day everyone had to weld and I didn't get a turn so when you get the chance to weld make sure you get it over with so you get your work done. At the end of the day you would have learnt something new so don't be afraid.

  20. my first time welding was intense because the flaming heat and the brightness inside of the fire. i had help with it though so we weren't having to do it ourselves. so i kinda enjoyed it and yes i would like to do it again.

  21. Welding can be very scary to do as I know how it feels, but instead thinking about what could happen like getting burnt or something, just try it out because then you'll overcome it like I did

  22. From my point of view,I think the process of welding was an awesome experience. I was nervous and a bit hesitant to weld at first because it looked scary and terrifying. But after I saw my other classmates do it, it looked essay. Welding is a learning curve, it's okay to be afraid at the start but after you try it out you'll be fine. Welding is safe and I guarantee you will enjoy it, be safe.

  23. The thought of welding was scary for me. I wasn't used to that sort of equipment and didn't believe that I could do it. Yes,it is very common to have fears and doubts about the welding, but it is important to try new things and face your fears when you are in the workshop. My own personal experience was scary to start with, but then I began to enjoy it. When you are welding, you sort of get an adrenaline rush and you start to do so well at it. When I was in the workshop, I sort of dodged welding for a wee while, that was until I decided that there wouldn't be any learning if I didn't weld. So I walked up to Ryan, who was assisting people with welding, and just got stuck in! The welding experience was fun, and while you are doing it, you have no fear of getting burned or injured. There is no reason for you to be afraid. Because once you get stuck in, there is nothing stopping you!!!

  24. welding is scary for me because I didn't know to work it, so I ask a friend to come and help me but the metal was to thick. So we had to stop the welding and make our shape for the top of the balancing toy. the next day I didn't had the chance to weld because the line was full so I waited and when it was about to be my turn class was going to end so I just decided to do my slides for the last one or two days.

  25. At first I was really nervous about welding. I was scared of messing up and burning my self But when my friend helped me It gave me confidence to do it and I thought that welding was fun and awesome.

  26. I thought it was going to be much more difficult but once I tried, it was easy. Going into it I felt no emotions, during it I felt no emotions, and by then end of it I felt like I wanted to weld again because it was fun.

  28. At first welding looked really hard to do. Mr. Rees helped me out on doing it , Most times i would try to escape from doing it. I was so nervous and scared at the same time. All these thoughts were going through my mind. After I welding with Mr. Rees help I got it done. Would I do it again? No still do not like welding because anything could happen. So I don't have hope in doing it again. I still had to weld my arrow to my balancing toy. But there was only one period so i didn't get to weld again. And that made me quite happy and annoyed. I'm too nervous to do it by myself even though Mr.Rees helped me.

  29. I thought that welding was really scary and maybe even dangerous at first but then i seen lots of my class mates doing it and began to think maybe it wasn't that bad.In fact it even looked fun to do if you do it right of course.

  30. Welding may look terrifying to some but what I heard from others it is actually fun. If you are nervous you can get the teacher to help you or someone from your class. Welding is a great experience and I would recommend doing it.

  31. I think welding is not that scary for me because I do welding at home with my dad. It's mostly heating the metal. I even touched the metal without my glove on because I know what part of the metal is heated. Mr Rees was like did you get burn I was like no. If I was burn I'll be like ahhhhhh.
